Attenuation
Attenuation can explain like reduction of signal strength during transmission. Measure of how much of the light injected into the fiber actually reaches the other end. Attenuation determines either how much fiber one can use in an application or how much light and optical source must produce. It is normally measured in decibels per kilometr and is highly wavelength dependent. In general, attenuation decreases with increasing wavelength for wavelengths below 2 micrometr. A number of independent loss mechanisms combine to determine the overall attenuation of an optical fiber.
